Ric’s Bar Gets Their COC Out

December 2nd, 2009

I was scanning the lead story in the local rag “The Independent” (which is a thinly disguised excuse for some property ads) over a quick lunch today. It’s about how Stephen Fitzgerald, the guy who has owned Ric’s Bar and Fat Boys Cafe in Fortitude Valley for the last 15 years is calling it quits due, he says, to “The Hill Song Brigade and Bligh”.

It read like a serious article until I got to this section on page two:

The Independent 2

He had to “get his COC out”? “We got the COC in our hands…”??

I started to think someone was ‘avin a laff.

Sure enough, the end of the story has this photo:

The Independent 3

I don’t know who the guy on the left is, but the guy on the right is Orson Welles.

In the online version of the story, The Independent uses this photo instead:

Stephen Fitzgerald, Ric's Bar

Well the story made me laugh but it’s a serious issue and it’ll be a shame to see Ric’s / Fat Boys go. I’ve seen a lot of great new bands there, including one of @pressdarling’s outfits. I think Fat Boys was the first place I had coffee in Brisbane when I moved here and it was great to know that a good latte could be found here, although, I’m sad to say, the last couple of coffees I had there were quite below par.

Brisbane Confidential 15 – Shih Chieh Huang’s Cubozoa-L-09

October 14th, 2009

Brisbane Confidential 15 – Shih Chieh Huang’s Cubozoa-L-09 from Brisbane Confidential on Vimeo.

Cubozoa –L-09 is a hauntingly beautiful and dramatic interactive and mutating installation which explores what happens to organisms when competition is removed by human depletion of fish and other environmental factors. It takes its cue from the invasion of the Brisbane River by blue blubber jellyfish.

New York based Taiwanese artist Shih Chieh Huang’s work explores the unusual evolutionary adaptations undertaken by creatures that reside in inhospitable conditions.

He creates analogous ecosystems in his installations and populates them with organic living things made from common, everyday domestic objects that comprise our modern existence.

These objects are reconstructed into experimental primitive organisms that reside on the fringes of evolutionary transformation: computer cooling fans are re-purposed for loco-motion, Tupperware serves as a skeletal framework, guitar tuners rewired to detect sound, and automatic night lights become a sensory input.

Cubozoa–L-09 is part of the 2009 Arc Biennial of Art which runs from September to December 2009 and will showcase innovative and groundbreaking works of Australian and International visual artists through an extensive program of exhibitions, installations and workshops.

For more information on the 2009 Arc Biennial of Art, including program information and full event listings please visit arcbiennial.com.

One thing I like about jazz, kid, is that I don’t know what’s going to happen next. Do you? —Bix Beiderbecke

During the Valley Jazz Festival I caught up with three of Brisbane’s best young jazz musicians – Rafael Karlen from the West End Composers Collective, Laura Kahle who is now based in NY but was a co-founder of the WECC and the guest composer and conductor for the WECC during the festival, and Andrew Garton from The Abbreviations Orchestra – to talk about the state of jazz in Brisbane.

Brisbane Confidential 10 – Campos, Fortitude Valley

August 21st, 2009

John Ronchi and Eugene Phua, owners of Campos Coffee in Fortitude Valley, were generous enough to be guests on the pilot episode of this show back in October 2008. So I was very pleased to hear recently that Campos has been voted the best cafe in the country by the thousands of their customers who participated in the annual LifeStyle FOOD Channel’s I Love FOOD Awards 2009. I sat down with John and Eugene again last week to get a tour of their roasting facility and to learn more about the wonders of the mighty bean.
